Don't know when this is from, but there are some similarities to others.

INDIAN RIVER COUNTY
Our investigations section has served a search warrant on a private residence in the city of Sebastian looking for illegally obtained artifacts. Sergeant Soverel began an investigation back in July of this year based on information supplied by Lieutenant Jack Daugherty. In July, Lieutenant Daugherty responded to a complaint of an individual removing artifacts from a shipwreck in the ocean near Vero Beach. A metal detector and eight encrusted artifacts were seized and sent to the Department of State, Bureau of Archaeological Research for evaluation. It was determined the encrusted items were artifacts illegally removed from state waters. Sergeant Soverel, working in a covert capacity, was able to meet and talk with the suspect on several occasions discussing a possible purchase of some of his artifacts, as well as locations he had excavated them from. The Indian River County State Attorney’s Office, the Department of State Bureau of Archaeological Research, the Indian River County Fire Department and local
officers assisted with the execution of the warrant. The fire department dive team conducted a grid search of the canal located behind the residence discovering several artifacts underwater. The suspect has been charged with two felony counts for the illegal excavation of artifacts from state land and eight misdemeanor counts for the illegal removal of artifacts from state lands. He was booked into the Indian River County jail.

Ultimately, they both were on State lands, so in some instances you kinda get what you ask for. Don't get me wrong , no IFP sucks ,Florida's selfish laws suck, but I am to old to run. I grew up in South Fl and watched my hometown, the Keys, overrun and ruined by development...I don't even recognize the place anymore.( where recently a FWC officer was arrested for heroin smuggling..who's protecting what?) Where has our freedom gone ? Who's pulling these strings ?? Get rid of them!! If we just stand by and feel sorry for ourselves it will only get worse. Fight for IFP reinstatement!!!!

I do have to reply to this. I am new here. My family had been in Florida since before the civil war. I grew up in the pinellas county area in the 70s/80s and saw the area go from orange groves to wall to wall subdivisions. The Florida of old is gone is in so much of the state. With this growth came more rules and regulations than you can shake a stick at. Busting people for taking items like these that are going to decay over time anyway if not removed from the acid they're in (salt water) is stupid.

I moved to georgia in 2003, and while I visit perry florida frequently to visit family it never ceases to amaze me the priorities that law enforcement goes with. The cop probably drove past 3 crack houses and 4 child molesters on the way to bust these people.

I agree, a part of me realizes there is nothing left to stand up for. I really miss the way it used to be. If you go to the Keys now you would never realize it was once just a small town. It's not just me, our whole community was broken up and displaced by greed and developement.TheState bought up everything it could and put up No Trespassing signs. And dare you even stop your car next to State land in Key Largo without being suspected of "drug running, devil worship, murder, etc." Being told by officers that "You're lucky we didn't shoot you". Whew, I guess so! It's ridiculous. Kinda surreal actually, very hard to believe. And the shipwreck stuff is deteriorating to nothing but ballast stones. I have a special place in my heart for shipwrecks being from the Keys. I am truly fortunate to have dove on the wrecks as a young 'in and to have the freedom I had growing up in paradise.

My family has lived in Florida since the 1850's. My ancestors settled pinellas county. James P. McMullen to be exact. We were cracker cowboys who lived among the indians and wilds of Florida. I feel I have the right to pick up any damn thing I want to! I will not back down to this stupid government we have let build up around us!!!! Kiss my ADZ!!

Looking back at this comment I wrote. Me and some buddies at work were discussing government and such. Got kind of riled up with the conversation and had to go to my favorite web-site only to get more frustrated with the Ecofina Bust. Just because my family has lived here for 160 years does NOT give me the right to just simply pick up anything I want. However it DOES give me the right to bitch about it. Now I dont know the hole story on the bust. For all I know they may have been caught digging in a mound. And if that's the case they deserve what they got! I was simply just blowin some steam. However we do need to come together and change some of these stupid, silly, and liberal laws were subjected too. And yes (jcinpc) I'm very familiar with the McMullen Cemetary on McMullen-Booth Road. My father is buried there.

I understand. I never got the chance to do any artifact hunting in that area. My dad moved us up to Tallahassee back in 1977. I was 10 then. My dad grew up in the area and has a few points. It got way to populated for him. Thank goodness he got us out of there. Have you ever been to the ole McMullen log cabin? It's in Heritage Park in Largo. My Great Great Grandfather built that cabin. I love history! No hard feelings man.

And your name goes on a list and you accept their regulation. Little by little our rights get nibbled away. No permit, permit, IFP, No IFP...!!??????
Mark my words, some day it will be illegal to pick up shark's teeth on the beach.

Oh Hale No!

To pick up a few good bones you are not required to give the state a donation for bending you over, unless you are from out of state in which case you must obligatorily bend anyway and get a blood permit.

Artifact collecting is prohibited in Florida state waters and in all State/National Parks/Preserves.

IFP Gone, Life Goes On. Maybe when the budget crunch finally trickles down they'll abolish the Historical Commission. That'll save some money. They've already laid off several marine patrol type LEO's in Tampa Bay and County park Rangers. Bad move congested area. I'll bet they are laying off Fish and Game just like they are city and state park employee and cutting programs and education for LEO's. Mixed emotions.
