View Full Version : Bainbridge Ga Deep South Super Show - May 12th 2012

I have had many ask about the Bainbridge Ga show and when we were going to plan the next one. Having attended shows all over the country over the past 20 years or so, I have seen some great ideas from shows in Texas and other places that make the entire experience so much more enjoyable. I have had many ask about the Bainbridge Ga show and when we were going to plan the next one, so.....
Heres the plan -
1) To have the largest and best attended Deep South Artifacts Show in the finest facility we have EVER had a show in the Deep South.
2) Host a first class Friday afternoon set up from 5pm until 8pm for exhibitors complete with catered BBQ included complimentary with table pricing.
3) Coordinate with a local event and festival to make it more of a "family" weekend, in the rare event that the rest of the family may not be as interested in tagging along, but would come if there was something else to do the same weekend, in the same town.
SOLUTION-
1) We have chosen the brand new, state of the art, 35,000 sq foot Kirbo Center at Bainbridge College as the new location of the 2012 Show. This location has AMPLE parking, its VERY easy to find (right off HWY 84), can accomodate up to 150 tables, and has a 500 seat auditorium complete with the latest in audio visual equipment. We would like to secure a couple of speakers (like Dr. Richard Gramly if possible, for example) and have powerpoint presentations, etc...
2) Tables will be $35 each (single) or $25 each for 2 or more. Friday night BBQ is included for exhibitors at no extra charge. Tables will be reserved upon prepayment only. PLEASE mail check or money order, for payment in full, to :
Kevin Dowdy
Bainbridge Ga Supershow
Po Box 7425
Bainbridge Ga.
39818-7425
This facility is very expensive and requires a minimum of 50% down to reserve it. We cant afford to have 10-12 "no shows" as can be common when there is no commitment from the reservee. I dont mind "pencilling" anyone in for tables, but if not paid in advance by March 1st, the reservation will not be held.
3) This show will be held in conjunction with RIVER TOWN DAYS 2012, a fun filled family event complete with free concerts, fireworks, and so much more -
River Town Days will be located at the Earle May Boat Basin (3 minutes away by automobile) again this year and will be held on Mother's Day weekend. Some of the activities that are included this year are (tentative):
Friday May 11th
Great River Rummage - 11:00 to 6:00 (Setup begins at 10:00)
Antique Car Show
Concerts - Begins at 6:30 (Last year was Atlanta Rhythm Section) This years planned theme is Margaritaville with an awesome Jimmy Buffett Tribute band.
Saturday May 12th
Great River Rummage - 7:00 to 3:00
Kid's Activities begin at 9:00 a.m. with games, rides and exhibits featuring; pirate ship, trout fishing pond, pony rides, mechanical bull, rockwall, dragonfly ride, water bubble balls, bouncers, animal booths by the Tallahassee Museum and crafts by Stones and Home Depot.
Kayak Race (in Boat Basin) - 10:00 a.m.
Flint River Raft Race (in Boat Basin) - 11:00 a.m.
Water Skiing Exhibition (in Flint River) - 12:00 p.m.
Boat Parade (in Flint River) - 1:00 p.m.
We would encourage you to mark your calendars and please plan on attending. We have had awesome attendance and participation in the past, and the community seems to be VERY "ready" for another great show. I will pull out ALL the stops to use every advertising medium I can involve (including our 4 radio stations for starters) for maximum exposure.
With no "slight" meant to any other show or show hosts, this will be the FINEST facility I have ever seen, host an artifact show. We are just fortunate to be able to procure this facility, that so many communities lack or want a ridiculous price for rental.
I would be grateful for any ideas or feedback to make this the best show experience you have ever been a part of. I hope that if we can put our best foot forward, we can do a LOT to influence the public that our hobby is one that they want to be a part of. We certainly need to grow our ranks and bring "new blood" into the hobby. The health of the hobby and its future depends on us raising the bar for the long term.

Dick, I am honored that you will make the trek to Bainbridge and I will do all that I can to make it a success and enjoyable. I need to see if any of the presenters at the Alachua Stone Age Fair, might be willing to attend and share their presentations in the state of the art auditorium? Thing is, I would be torn whether to be in the show or in the auditorium. That would be the kind of "hard" choices that I hope can be reality.

Sounds great! Please put me down for two tables. A couple questions:
Will this be, in essence, a two day show? Will the public (non-table holders) be allowed in on Friday? Will there be over night security?
Hernandoman
08-30-2011, 08:33 PM
Thanks so much Nate - I am tickled you are coming!
We will definitely have ARMED overnight security.
Tricky thing about Friday is that we have negotiated a reduced rate for a 3 hour set up (5pm until 8). If we go beyond that, we will have to pay a HALF DAY minimum rental (which is quite pricey) so...... At this point, we do NOT plan to allow the public in.
The Temple Texas show is one of the PREMIER shows in the entire country and Friday is reserved for exhibitors only. Dont wanna exclude anyone but paying for tables and having a meal provided should have a few privileges that wouldnt be available to the general public. JMO, but nothing in stone.

Dick, there is a brand new Holiday Inn Express at 1413 Tallahassee Hwy - 229-246-6771. This would be the newest and most modern hotel in town. A little pricier, but nice.
The Charter House Inn (1401 Tallhassee Hwy) generally gives a better rate if you tell them you are with the artifacts show. Ask for Leslie Bernier and tell her I sent you, if you dont mind a little older motel that has been remodeled. 229-246-8550. Tell Leslie you want one of the nicer remodeled rooms. They have a nice pool and a decent bar and usually a decent band on various weekends.

Many of the antique bottle shows allow early admission during dealer set-up, for a price, usually around 20 bucks (dinners/banquets extra), also paid in advance just like an exhibitor. Not only does this help to pay overhead costs for the club or individual sponsoring the show, but it expands the sales base for those wishing to sell artifacts. They can get their highest price when they first pull that great piece out of the box, with those crowded around thinking, "gotta have it now, before somebody else grabs it". I've seen tables at this stage of a show with people 3-deep, where I couldn't even see the table, much less what's being pulled out.

Kyle, thanks so much for allowing Bainbridge to be the first show you have displayed your collection, I will do my best to make it a good time.
Bainbridge is the county seat of about 27,000 people and has been VERY well attended by the public in the past. We will do everything we can to draw a crowd from 8-10 counties in S.W. Georgia and of course from counties in Alabama and Florida. The key to a successful show is the attending public. While I enjoy attending all shows, these shows where only collectors/dealers show up, dont do much for promoting and growing the hobby.
Jimbo, do you recommend allowing the public in on Friday night during dealer setup? Also, are you connected in the Bottle Collecting Community to help us get the word out and get bottle collectors there?

Sure, as long as they've paid the Early Admission fee and are issued a name tag showing that. Some shows require EAs to pay in advance, others at the door. Either way, you normally pick up your name tag at the door.
And I'll be glad to get the word out any way that I can.

Matt, come on ! We would love to have you and maybe you could share a table with another collector?
I have been in communication with an avid collector that is pursuing having a first class Live Southeastern Artifacts Auction. We are giving strong consideration to having a LIVE AUCTION from 3 until 5 pm immediately following and in conjunction with the Super Show. This would add another dimension to the show, make great use of the first class 500 seat auditorium, and provide a venue for artifacts to be sold that did not sell during the show, provide a venue for folks to sell that may not be as comfortable selling one on one, etc.... The possibilities could be endless. The Auction could include other collectibles besides artifacts, and could be promoted to those attending the show having free admission to the auction as well.
This auction could include bidders by phone, etc... if pre-registered and approved for bidding. The auction would be ran in a professional but yet fun manner and well worth staying the extra 2 hours.
Any thoughts, feedback, suggestions?

Ill see how this winters collecting goes. I have plans of digging up a secret hot spot I found a few years ago. Never been touched by a plow or logging crew.....just waiting for the ''guardian'' snakes to hybernate. If it's as good as i plan for it to be then i should have more than ONE frame of whole points. Ill let you know Kevin when i decide.

As far as the auction is concerned -
This was tried a couple years ago, the major flaw was bidders did not know what they were bidding on. There needs to be some kind of projection system that would provide pictures on a large screen of the item up for bids so potential buyers do not have to leave their seats to see the item.
Hernandoman
09-13-2011, 08:47 PM
Thanks Matt!
This state of the art facility will have huge screens that we can use for the auction. We plan on having the auction items on the screen. Artifact auctions have been quite successful up north and its past time the Deep South had its own similar venue.
We will have both a LIVE and Silent Auction. The silent auction will/can be for a variety of items - including display cases, books, pumps, maybe even some of these famous digging shovels, etc... and more.
I am also working on a raffle on a thousand dollar plus point.
God willing, this will not be your "ordinary" show in any aspect, if we can get everything to come together.

Very minimal response regarding the Live Auction... Does this indicate lack of interest?
old creek warrior
09-15-2011, 06:37 AM
Might indicate a lack of money. It's a tough economy.I wound like to go to see it but doubt i would bid on anything. If I could cut my monthly gas bill alone in half I could get me a new truck.

Thanks OCW for the feedback and Happy Belated Birthday too!
Auctions tend to produce some exceptional values for the fortunate that may have a little disposable income.
The flip side is that auctions also provide a venue to sell for those that are in need of money and havent been able to sell previously.
The nature of a Live Auction can lend viability to good and bad economies, where both buyer and seller can win-win.....

09-15-2011, 09:07 AM
I believe it will be a fun thing to do. The silent auction will give plenty of exposure to the points. A live auction will be great if we can put the points on display before the auction and have pics on a big screen. Our northern brothers have had successful auctions for years. We've only tried it one time so I'm ready to try again.
Hernandoman
09-15-2011, 09:42 AM
Thanks for the feedback.
I think it is indeed tied to "content". Content is KING.
This auction will not be restricted to only G-10 arrowheads.
There could be a variety of quality offerings, like a Dean Quigley framed print, an original set of Kolomoki Excavations books by Sears (Volumes 1-4), sump pumps, ghenooe, Scooters, Dive Gear, for a few examples. I am not saying any of these items will be specifically offered, but the auction could be a good way to sell something you want/need to turn, and a great way for a perspective buyer to find something on their "wish" list. Thats all.
IF the content is what it needs to be, I cant imagine there not being interest, but hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained. If the folks up north can do it with success, I dont know why we cant.

Auctions are fun for sure, even if you dont bid there fun to watch.I would like to sit down and look at the Kolomoki Excavations books, that would be killer.....I see your point about maybe being able to snag a bargain Kevin, not being restricted to just G-10's and having other items up for bid puts a whole different perspective on it.

Here’s a quick update on the live auction portion of the Bainbridge Super Show. As referenced earlier, I will be the contact person handling the live auction portion of the show, and I thank Hernandoman and all at Artifacts Guide for the opportunity to do so, and for putting together such a huge event. Go ahead and put in now for your time off work (and your wife) if necessary LOL. This show will be worth it! Here is a preliminary rundown of what we are working on at this point in time. There will be a live auction beginning at approximately 3:30-4:00 on show day. Length will depend on the number of items being offered, but an estimate would be about 2 -3 hours. Items will be mostly artifacts and related items, but there will also be other collectibles such as bottles, contact era pieces and other general items. I know there are a lot of questions regarding this portion of the show, and as a result there will be a separate website dedicated to the auction which will contain all the details, rules, and answers to general questions. This website is under construction right now, and the webmaster is telling me it should be up in approximately 2 weeks. This is a new and evolving idea and I appreciate any input or suggestions from site members. Let’s make it an awesome event! I can be reached at tristatedan@gmail.com or I will have a table at the Albany Artifact Show. Please stop by, it’s always great to see new and old faces. I will post updates when available.

Just my thoughts:
Many people will be traveling upwards of 5-6 hours to attend this show. Usually vendors will spend the night in a hotel the night before a show (Friday), and travel home in the afternoon and evening after the show (Saturday). By having the auction after the show (sounds like it will run until 6:00 or 7:00pm), it will require these people to stay two nights in hotel, and then be traveling half the day on Sunday.
Why not have the auction Friday night (after setup) when more people are likely to attend?
Hernandoman
09-29-2011, 08:39 PM
The Auction will most likely start around 2-2:30 and most likely run for a couple of hours. The current plan is for this auction to be accessible online, via phone, etc...LIVE as well. Saturday afternoon will most likely be much more conducive to participation for off-site bidding as well, rather than Friday night.
We only have a SMALL window for set up on Friday night (3 hours MAX). If we go over that window, we pay for a full days rental for Friday. I dont see that happening. The plan is to have set up, an organized preshow at the venue, and feed all the exhibitors in the 3 hour window on Friday night.
Those that do have to travel 4-5 hours (which would be unlikely for the majority of those attending), might not stay for the auction anyway.
We'll give it a whirl and if its successful this first time (which I am very hopeful it will be), we may look at renting the facility for 2 full days - Friday and Saturday.
I can tell you guys that DannyMac will definitely give it his BEST to make it work and be successful. I am EXCITED about it!
The really successful SUPERSHOWS, are multi-day events and require at least 2 nights motel stays for those traveling. Having attended several (like Temple, Collinsville, KY DAM, Pigeon Forge, etc..), its gonna take a little more progressive mindset to truly bring a SUPERSHOW to the Deep South.

I know it's a little ways off, but I thought I would throw a couple of pictures of some items that will be at the Bainbridge Show Live Auction. Nice Stanfield from Marion County Florida with a Rogers COA, and a Savannah River. I will bring these to the Albany Show along with some other items that will be in the auction. Stop by my table for more info on the show and auction. Web site is coming along, and will have several shots of each item to view. Much more to come, stay tuned.

I have had several people ask about the upcoming auction that will be at the Bainbridge Show, so here are some updated pictures of some of the items that will be crossing the auction block. The first two pictures (Newnan and Hamilton) have Tatum C.O.A's. If you have any specific questions, or want to contact me, please do so: tristatedan@gmail.com or for more general info: www.tristateauctionsite.com . This auction will have a wide range of items from $10 points on up, so there will be something for everyone. The auction will be at the same facility as the show and will start at 2:00, so stick around and watch, or throw a bid out there, you never know. I will be posting new pictures of items as we shoot them, so stay tuned.

04-02-2012, 09:41 PM
Joe, thanks for letting me know that you have heard the ads already on Dixie Country 106.7 FM. We are spending quite a bit of $$$ advertising this show, all across S. Georgia.. I wish I knew of a station in N. Florida and S.E Alabama that had great coverage and reasonable rates.
We have already started running ads on our FM Cluster here in the Bainbridge Ga area.
We will have a big write up in Rifle and Rod Magazine, due out in a couple weeks. We are also buying ads in the Bainbridge Newspaper. We really want to get the folks to come out. That is the true measure of a successful show - the number of folks that you can get to come through the front doors. JMHO....
If anyone else knows of affordable cost effective advertising in S. Ga, N. Florida, or S.E. Alabamam, let me know. I will certainly check into it.

Artifact auction is shaping up nicely. Consignments are still coming in and there will be a nice selection of items, including some early contact era items crossing the block. Stay tuned for more pictures of items coming soon. We are also printing a catalog/sales flyer for the auction. If you would like a free one mailed to you, shoot me your mailing address to: tristatedan@gmail.com and I will get one out to you as soon as they get back from the printer. Should be about a week or so. Here are a few more pics to hold you over untill then. :)

Some mighty fine inventory you got there Dan !
I dont think anyone realizes just how big this Auction is or realizes the potential for the buyers and sellers !
This auction will be LIVE at the Kirbo Center starting at 2:00 pm and will be Hosted by a national auction site (correct me if I have this wrong) and conducted locally by a trusted and licensed auctioneer. Folks will be able to bid in person, online, or by phone.
This is a WONDERFUL OPPORTUNITY to buy and sell to a LARGE potential audience! I have several items I will be running through the auction, along with several other collectors.
You dont wanna miss this opportunity!

I will continue to update everyone on new items that will be added to the auction lineup. Here are a few more items consigned today. River stained bone pins are from the Aucilla River area, Buckles are metal detector finds from around several Florida forts. Ladies and Gents, behold, the entire online auction catalog in its entirety !:p This link will take you straight to the catalog.
http://www.liveauctioneers.com/catalog/29526
Please remember if you want to register to bid online, you must do so in advance of the auction. Once the auction starts, we cannot approve any more online bidders. If you do want to bid online, it is simple. Just register in advance through the liveauctioneers.com site, and you will receive a conformation email that you can now bid within a day or so. On auction day, go to www.liveauctioneers.com, and on the main page you will see a list of live auctions. We are Tristate Auction and Collectibles, and the auction title is Prehistoric and Historic Artifact Auction. Anyone can watch by clicking on the tab that says “view live”. If you are signed up to bid you will see “bid live” instead. Click on either view live or bid live and a new window will pop open and you can bid or just watch from the comfort of your home or anywhere else. There is also a Droid app and an I Phone app if you want to get mobile. There is also a "help" tab on the main page if you need more help with anything. Click on any item, and it will allow you to see large images, and all different sides. All items have several pictures each once you click on it. There may be more additions or adjustments to the catalog as we get closer, so check back often. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me an e-mail: tristatedan@gmail.com

I dont know how you didnt get a flyer or a TSAS newsletter. I mailed over 500 show flyers out to CURRENT and PAST TSAS members.
Of course, I had approximately 50 returned as undeliverable by the postal service. I am not sure if you are in that returned batch or not.
The show has been WIDELY publicized, on this site, Jackys site, Tatum's site, in the last 3 TSAS newsletters, by mail, on radio, in several newspapers, in the PX, Facebook, and even on Ebay (show flyer in the artifact section).

So Kevin I am looking at a map. If I grab 27 out of Tally and just head north that will get me to 84 then just head east?

Dave, exactly. The Charter House will be on the right as you get to the 27/84 bypass. Take the bypass (84E) for about a mile or so until it merges, go through the first light and you cant miss the Kirbo Center at Bainbridge College on the right, just past that traffic light.

Quick update on the auction. I have had a couple of people ask about the start time. It starts at 2:00 Eastern. The web site liveauctioneers.com states 11:00am Pacific because their servers are located there. 11:00 am Pacific is 2:00pm Eastern. I have no control over this, and hope it does not cause any confusion. See you Saturday :)

Ok, anyone wanna drop by and hear the story of how I unbelievably boogered up the best point I found laat year before I do the walk of shame over to Gomers table can enjoy a good chuckle. I did it the night I found it and was sick to my stomach for days. So bad I only shared with one person! And if anyone can guess how I did it I will give you the point. lol

I was dirty as all get out so the old lady brought me a towel out on the porch so I could wrap around me and drop my drawers w/o the neighbors calling 911. The tip was sticking out of my hand and when I wrapped the towel around me the tip got hung up in the towel and away she went!! Gomers resurrecting it now. Great show Kevin, best time I' ve had at a show!
